Time a real day, not a demo patient
Ask the vendor to document a full-body skin examination with three lesions of interest, one biopsy and one cryotherapy, and time it. Then ask them to do a straightforward acne follow-up and time that. If the product cannot do both quickly it does not matter how good the imaging module is, because the cost is paid forty times a day. Bring your own commonest two visit types to every demo and use the same two everywhere so the timings are comparable.
The pathology loop, end to end
Specimen labelling at the point of biopsy, the requisition to your laboratory, the result returning against the right lesion on the right patient, the notification to the patient, and the tracking of anything that has not come back. Ask to be shown the outstanding-specimens report specifically. Most products can show a result arriving; fewer can show you what has not arrived, and that is the report that prevents the letter you never want to receive.
Photography and lesion mapping
Body mapping that survives between visits, images filed against a mapped lesion rather than against the patient generally, and comparison over time in the room. This is where dermatology-specific products earn their keep and where a general ambulatory system usually scores one. Weight it according to how much of your practice is surveillance rather than treatment, because for a mole-check-heavy clinic it is close to a must-have.
